{"id":5178,"date":"2024-08-10T19:59:14","date_gmt":"2024-08-11T00:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ahvmed.com\/?p=5178"},"modified":"2024-08-10T19:59:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-11T00:59:14","slug":"remission-of-type-2-diabetes-feasible-with-soup-and-shake-diet-intervention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahvmed.com\/?p=5178","title":{"rendered":"Remission of type 2 diabetes feasible with soup and shake diet intervention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2024\/remission-of-type-2-di.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2024\/remission-of-type-2-di.jpg\" data-sub-html>\n<figure>\n            <img src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2024\/remission-of-type-2-di.jpg\" alt=\"Remission of type 2 diabetes feasible with soup and shake diet intervention\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"><br \/>\n                    <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A behavioral intervention designed to support weight loss can yield remission of type 2 diabetes, according to a study <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S2213858724001943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> online Aug 5 in <i>The Lancet Diabetes &#038; Endocrinology<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Valabhji, M.D., from NHS England in the United Kingdom, and colleagues assessed remission of type 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/diabetes\/\" rel=\"tag\">diabetes<\/a> among participants in the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission program, a 12-month <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/behavioral+intervention\/\" rel=\"tag\">behavioral intervention<\/a> to support weight loss, which included a three-month period of total diet replacement (composed of nutritionally formulated products such as soups, shakes, and bars and a total daily calorie intake of 800 to 900 kcal).<\/p>\n<p>A total of 1,740 participants started total diet replacement before January 2022 and had 12 months to complete the program by the time of data extraction in December 2022; 55% completed the program and had weight recorded at 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that the mean weight loss for the 1,710 participants who started the program before January 2022 and had no <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/missing+data\/\" rel=\"tag\">missing data<\/a> was 8.3% or 9.4 kg, and the mean weight loss was 9.3% or 10.3 kg for the 945 participants who completed the program and had no missing data.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 27% of a subgroup of 710 participants who started the program before January 2022 and had two hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurements recorded had remission, with mean weight loss of 13.4% or 14.8 kg.
