{"id":4586,"date":"2022-05-11T06:22:45","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T11:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heartandvascularmed.com\/?p=4586"},"modified":"2022-05-11T06:22:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T11:22:45","slug":"special-session-of-the-who-regional-committee-for-europe-summary-and-outcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahvmed.com\/?p=4586","title":{"rendered":"Special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe: summary and outcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>&#xD;<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on health conditions locally, as well as health matters regionally and beyond, were the focus of a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe today.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual special session, moderated from WHO\/Europe in Copenhagen, Denmark, was called by Ukraine and 42 other Member States, including all 27 European Union Member States.<\/p>\n<p>WHO Director-General Dr\u00a0Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr\u00a0Hans Henri P.\u00a0Kluge outlined WHO\u2019s efforts and commitment to support the people of Ukraine both at this time and in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>The main focus of the special session was a draft resolution proposed by 38 Member States with 3 key requests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>for the Regional Director to explore options to safeguard the work of the WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD Office), including through its relocation to an area outside the Russian Federation;<\/li>\n<li>for the Regional Director to consider temporarily suspending all regional meetings in the Russian Federation; and<\/li>\n<li>for the WHO Director-General to prepare a dedicated report for consideration at the upcoming Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly, assessing the health emergency in Ukraine and related international health risks as well as proposed responses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After several countries offered remarks on the proposed resolution, a roll-call vote was taken. Of the 48 Member States present to vote, 43 voted in favour of adopting the resolution, 3 voted against, and 2 abstained. The resolution was therefore adopted by a large majority.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of the special session of the Regional Committee will now be formally conveyed to the WHO Director-General. As directed by the resolution, Dr\u00a0Tedros will bring this to the attention of the World Health Assembly and prepare a dedicated report, with WHO\/Europe\u2019s input, assessing the health emergency in Ukraine, consequential international health risks and proposed responses.<\/p>\n<p>In wrapping up today\u2019s meeting, the Regional Director noted, \u201cThese are tough times, but WHO\u2019s resolve to put health at the centre of recovery \u2013 rising above politics \u2013 is stronger than ever. While we discuss and debate, real lives of real people are on the line \u2013 millions of children, women and men. Let us never lose sight of that. Every action has an impact; thinking through all of the consequences may take time, but our ultimate aim is to ensure the health and well-being of the people we are mandated to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr\u00a0Kluge concluded, \u201cPan-European unity is more than a slogan \u2013 it\u2019s the best way to move forward to ensure health for all. Let us remember the spirit that created the European Programme of Work, unanimously approved in 2020 by all 53 Member States in the WHO European Region. It\u2019s this spirit that should guide us going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<h2>About the Regional Committee<\/h2>\n<p>The Regional Committee is the highest decision-making body of the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region.
